Saint Roch Candles are dressed and burned to petition Saint Roch and invoke his holy blessing. Also known as Saint Rocco, he is honored as a patron of dogs, the sick and disabled, the falsely accused, bachelors, and those with knee problems.
According to devotional tradition, Roch stayed to minister to people in an area afflicted with plague, and miraculous cures were attributed to his prayers and the sign of the cross. After contracting the illness himself, he withdrew into a forest, where a dog befriended him. The dog brought him food from its master’s table and tended his wounds. This story is central to Saint Roch’s enduring association with dogs.
