Saint Lucia Candle Vigil

Santa Lucia (or Saint Lucy) was born into a wealthy noble family in Syracuse around the year 283. During a pilgrimage to the tomb of St Agatha, Lucy had a vision of Agatha telling her she would cure her mother’s illness (internal bleeding), which she did. After this experience Lucy knew she must dedicate her life to Christ. She made a vow to remain a virgin to better serve her purpose, which was a devastating blow to the pagan man she had been arranged to marry. Over the following years Lucy’s fame in dedicating her life to the poor spread throughout Syracuse and beyond. The young man who wished to marry her, seeing Lucy give all her money and possessions to the poor, and having been refused, decided to denounce her to the town prefect as a Christian. The Romans brought Lucia to a public trial hoping to humiliate and discredit her and her religion. Instead they were aghast as her steadfast faith and resolute answers to their challenges won her much support and even converted many of those in attendance. She was sentenced to be burned to death. A fire was lit, but the flames would not touch her. She again began to speak eloquently to the crowd that the persecution of Christians would not last much longer. Finally a Roman soldier drew his sword and cut her throat which finally killed her on December 13, 304. In some versions of the tale, her eyes were gauged out during her execution. In other versions, when her suitor complimented her eyes she plucked them out on her own and offered them to him. Because of her iconic association with eyes, Saint Lucy has become the patron saint of the blind and those suffering afflictions of the eyes. Rev.
