The Saint Lucia Candle Vigil is traditionally used to seek the intercession of the protector of the eyes, patron saint of the blind and those suffering afflictions of sight.

Santa Lucia, or Saint Lucy, was born into a wealthy noble family in Syracuse around the year 283. According to tradition, during a pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint Agatha, Lucy had a vision foretelling her mother’s healing. After this experience, Lucy dedicated her life to Christ and vowed to remain a virgin, much to the disappointment of the pagan man she had been arranged to marry.

Lucy devoted her wealth and possessions to helping the poor. Her rejected suitor denounced her as a Christian, and she was brought to trial. Accounts of her martyrdom describe her steadfast faith, her refusal to renounce it, and a fire whose flames would not touch her. She was ultimately killed by a soldier’s sword in 304.

Some versions of her story describe her eyes being removed during her martyrdom; others tell of her offering them to her suitor. Through this association, Saint Lucia became the patron saint of the blind and those suffering afflictions of the eyes. Her intercession is sought for protection of sight and spiritual support through eye-related illness.
