Saint Gerard Majella Candles are dressed and burned to petition Saint Gerard for assistance with matters involving childbirth and conception.
According to the story associated with his patronage, a few months before his death, Saint Gerard visited the Pirofalo family and accidentally dropped his handkerchief. One of the girls spotted it after he had left and ran after him to return it. “Keep it,” he told her. “You may need it some day.”
Years later, when the girl was a married woman facing a life-threatening childbirth, she remembered his words and asked for the handkerchief. The story tells that her pain disappeared and she gave birth to a healthy child. Word of the miracle spread, and the mothers of Italy took Gerard to their hearts as their patron. During his beatification proceedings, a witness described him as the “saint of happy childbirths.”
