Saint Peregrine is honored as a patron saint of those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses. His vigil is dressed and burned to petition for his intercession, seeking healing, comfort, and strength during difficult times.
Born in Forlì, Italy, Peregrine initially rebelled against the Church. According to accounts of his life, an encounter in which he struck a priest left him filled with remorse and a desire for repentance. He devoted himself to prayer and service, eventually joining the Servites in Siena after a vision of the Virgin Mary directed him there. His care for the poor and afflicted, together with his freely given wisdom, earned him the name “Angel of Good Counsel.”
Later in life, a painful growth on his leg led to plans for amputation. Devotional tradition recounts that, on the night before surgery, Peregrine prayed and dreamed that Christ touched and healed him. Upon waking, he found his leg healed. This story became the foundation of his enduring association with those facing cancer and severe illness. His feast day is observed on May 1.
